How to Become an Electrician in Australia

  1. Finish secondary school — Strong basic maths and science skills are useful.
  2. Find an electrical apprenticeship — You work for an employer while completing formal training.
  3. Complete Certificate III electrical training — Electrical apprentices commonly work toward a Certificate III-level qualification.
  4. Train under a licensed electrician — Apprentices perform electrical work under the required supervision.
  5. Learn Australian electrical standards — You need to understand the rules and standards that apply to electrical installation work.
  6. Develop practical skills — Wiring, switchboards, testing, fault finding, motors, circuits and electrical equipment.
  7. Learn electrical safety — PPE, isolation, testing for dead, safe work procedures and hazard identification.
  8. Complete your apprenticeship — Australian apprenticeships combine paid workplace training with formal education and can take around 1–4 years depending on the apprenticeship.
  9. Apply for your electrical licence — Electrical licensing is controlled by the relevant state or territory, so requirements differ.

  1. Keep upgrading your skills — After qualification, you can specialize in areas such as industrial electrical work, maintenance, solar, automation, or power systems.

Important: If you're coming from overseas with electrical qualifications, don't assume your qualification automatically gives you an Australian electrical licence. Some jurisdictions provide pathways involving assessment, recognition and/or gap training.

For example, Queensland has separate electrical work licence classes, including electrical mechanic, electrical linesperson, electrical fitter and electrical jointer.
